Backcountry Base Camp 2013

“What is that? A binding?” a curious skier probed, pointing to the Dynafit Radical tech binding. The same round of questions were hurled at the Backcountry staff throughout the weekend as crowds of skiers shuffled into the handcrafted Surely Yurts to catch a break from the looming Jay Cloud. As the snow continued to dust Jay Peak, skiers lined up with excitement—some sought answers; others were anxious to demo the latest AT, splitboard and telemark equipment.

The cozy yurts had a handful of skier in them at any given time—were they fondled boots, tinkered with bindings and caressed skins.

Anyone willing to give touring a try found gear from the Outdoor Gear Exchange demo fleet, and Jesse Williams of Keene, N.Y.-based Cloudsplitter Guides took multiple groups out for tours.

Deep snow gave touring groups the full effect of what it’s like to lay down a fresh skintrack. Williams shared quick, informative lessons and then stepped aside to let skinners have it on their own.

To loosen up skiers for the drive home, we threw an après party complete with raffle, free beer and a whole lot of dancing.
